What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction surgery is plastic surgery that restores one or both of the breasts to their normal shape, appearance, symmetry, and size following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other deformities. It is often performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date.

Implant and Flap Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction generally falls into two categories: implant based or flap reconstruction. Implant reconstruction utilizes breast implants to help form a new breast mound. Flap reconstruction uses the patient’s own tissue from another part of the body to form a new breast. All our physicians at Illume Cosmetic Surgery are familiar with both approaches and will help guide you towards the option that best fits your needs and desires.

Breast Reconstruction Consultation

A personal consultation with one of our board certified plastic surgeons is the first step for anyone considering breast reconstruction. During this meeting, one of our surgeons will assess your physical and emotional health and discuss your specific goals for surgery.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery and Recovery

Your breast reconstruction procedure will take place at either one of our dedicated surgical suites on-site or a hospital, depending on your case and insurance coverage. Throughout the surgery and your recovery period, our medical team will closely monitor your physical condition. Typically, the procedure lasts about 1.5-2.5 hours, followed by at least one hour of attentive care in our recovery room before discharge.

Under anesthesia, you’ll be comfortably asleep throughout the procedure, ensuring you experience no pain. Delete mastectomy sentence.

While you’re under anesthesia, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will proceed with the breast reconstruction. For implant-based reconstruction, our surgeon will carefully place the implant into your chest. Alternatively, for flap procedures, tissue will be taken from another part of your body and skillfully formed to create the new breast shape.

During the surgery, our medical team may insert drains under your skin to assist with fluid and blood drainage during the recovery process. These drains, with one end protruding from your chest, aid in your healing. They will be removed by your provider once they are no longer required.
