Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is one of the most transformative facial surgeries available. Rhinoplasty is often chosen to improve facial harmony, enhance breathing, or both. No matter the reason, the results can enhance your appearance, comfort, and confidence. If you’re considering the procedure or already have one scheduled, understanding what to expect during recovery can help you feel prepared, informed, and at ease.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline
The First 24–48 Hours After Rhinoplasty
Immediately after surgery, you’ll likely experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort, all of which are completely normal. Your nose will be protected with a splint, and you may have internal packing or soft splints depending on your surgeon’s technique.
- Swelling and bruising typically appear around the nose and under the eyes.
- Mild bleeding or drainage from the nose may occur for the first day or two.
- Pain is usually manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medications.
- You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
From the Experts: Keeping your head elevated, even while sleeping, can reduce swelling and speed up healing.
The First Week
Most patients take about a week off from work or social activities after rhinoplasty.
- The nasal splint typically stays on for about 5–7 days.
- Bruising under the eyes will begin to fade but may still be visible.
- You may feel congested as swelling affects the nasal passages. This is temporary.
- Avoid strenuous activity, blowing your nose, or wearing glasses directly on the bridge of your nose.
If you have nasal packing, it will typically be removed within the first few days, and you’ll feel noticeably more comfortable afterward. By the end of the first week, or occasionally two, all dressings, splints, and stitches should be removed.
Weeks 2–6: Nose Healing Continues
- Most visible bruising resolves by the end of week 2.
- Swelling begins to decrease, especially around the bridge of the nose.
- You may return to low-impact physical activity after a few weeks, but always check with your surgeon.
- By week 3–4, you’ll likely feel more confident returning to work, events, and social plans.
From the Experts: During this time, your nose will be extra sensitive to sun exposure, which can affect healing and pigmentation. Always wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat if you’re outside.
Long-Term Rhinoplasty Recovery
Rhinoplasty recovery is gradual, especially when it comes to subtle changes in nasal tip definition or contour. While you’ll see improvements early on, final results can take up to a year to fully develop as residual swelling slowly resolves.
- Swelling at the nasal tip is usually the last to disappear.
- You’ll likely attend a few follow-up appointments throughout the year to track progress.
- Patience is essential. Your results will continue to refine and improve over time.
