MedSpa Tips: How Much Botox Will You Need on Your Visit?

Botox remains a widely sought-after cosmetic treatment, reflecting an increasing interest among individuals. When thinking about the cosmetic procedure, the questions of “How many units of Botox do I need?” or “How many units of Botox is required?” is often asked. There is not one singular answer to these questions as Botox is not a one size fits all solution. Multiple variables influence the determination, such as the targeted area, your unique requirements, and desired outcomes.

What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved prescription treatment that is used to improve the appearance of frown lines, crow’s feet, fine lines, wrinkles, and horizontal forehead lines. The botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve signals to facial muscles, reducing their ability to move and thus softening the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, Botox can enhance skin tightness and refine pore appearance. Botox proves to be a successful cosmetic procedure for achieving a more youthful appearance.

How Many Units of Botox Will I Need?

To know how many units are truly required, you can schedule a Botox consultation with one of our RN Injectors. However, there is a typical range of units required for different areas. The number of units needed can vary from person to person due to age, different facial anatomy, and different aesthetic goals. The number of units required also depends on where you want your Botox injected. For example, larger muscles, like the masseter muscle (TMJ) or the forehead, may require more units compared to smaller muscles, such as those around the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet).

The list below is segmented into areas where you can receive Botox and the typical number of units one would need.

Eyes

  • Crow’s Feet – Typically 6 – 14 units per side
  • Crow’s Feet are the lines that are visible around the corners of your eyes when smiling or squinting, usually demanding fewer Botox units due to the less weak muscles in this region compared to those in the forehead.

Forehead and Brows

  • Between Brows – Typically 9 – 30 units
  • Forehead – Typically 8 – 25 units
  • Forehead muscles tend to be strong and highly active, which is why forehead lines often become noticeably prominent. Glabella lines (the lines between your brows) are separate from the horizontal forehead lines and require separate treatment. Botox can smooth the fine lines and wrinkles and help to tighten the skin in both areas

Neck

  • Neck – Typically 10 – 25 units
  • Necklace Line – Typically 10 – 30 units
  • As you age, platysma bands may protrude, becoming more prominent. Botox injections can help tighten the muscle, reducing its visibility and creating a smoother appearance.

Lips

  • Under Lip Corners – Typically 2 – 8 units
  • Lower Lip – Typically 2 – 3 units
  • Upper Lip – Typically 3 – 12 units
  • By receiving above the lip and around the corners, you can receive a Botox Lip Flip. This will relax the muscles causing the lip to curl upwards, creating the look of fuller lips

Other Areas

  • Chin – Typically 4 -10 units
  • Jaw (TMJ)  – Typically 5 – 22 units per side
  • Underarm Sweating – Typically 100 units total
  • Nose – Typically 2 –6 units
