Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Mammograms and Support for Survivors at Illume

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a great time to stress the importance of early detection and provide support for survivors. At Illume Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, we recognize how critical mammograms are for early detection, as well as how vital it is to provide care and compassion to breast cancer survivors. In this blog, we’ll cover the significance of mammograms, how to prepare for yours, and the services Illume offers to support breast cancer survivors.

The Importance of Mammograms

A mammogram is an essential tool in detecting breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective. It uses low-dose X-rays to examine breast tissue for any abnormal growths or changes. Regular mammograms can greatly improve the chances of catching breast cancer at an early stage, where the treatment outcomes are more favorable.

  • Early Detection Makes a Difference: The American Cancer Society recommends that women aged 40 and older get annual mammograms. Early detection allows for less invasive treatments and more successful outcomes.
  • Self-Exams Aren’t Enough: While self-exams are important, mammograms can detect tumors that are too small to feel. It’s a critical part of a comprehensive approach to breast health.

How to Prepare for Your Mammogram

While it’s common to feel anxious about a mammogram, preparing in advance can help you feel more comfortable and confident before your appointment. Here are a few tips to get ready:

  • Choose the Right Time: Try to schedule your mammogram a week after your period when your breasts are less tender. Avoid scheduling it during your period if you tend to have breast sensitivity.
  • Avoid Deodorants and Lotions: On the day of your mammogram, skip deodorants, powders, and lotions as these can interfere with the imaging process and create confusing results on the mammogram.
  • Wear a Two-Piece Outfit: Since you’ll only need to remove your top for the exam, wearing a two-piece outfit can help you feel more comfortable.
  • Inform the Technician About Any Symptoms: If you’ve noticed any changes in your breasts, like lumps or discharge, be sure to inform the technician before your mammogram.
  • Relax and Breathe: While some women may experience mild discomfort from breast compression during the mammogram, deep breathing techniques can help you stay relaxed throughout the procedure.

Support for Breast Cancer Survivors at Illume

At Illume Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, we believe that breast cancer survivors deserve exceptional care and support as they heal and rebuild their lives. That’s why we offer a range of services designed to help survivors regain confidence and feel like themselves again.

  • Breast Reconstruction: Illume’s board-certified plastic surgeons specialize in breast reconstruction for cancer survivors, offering both implant-based and tissue-based options to restore the breast’s appearance. All of our physicians are highly experienced in both approaches and will guide you in selecting the option that best fits your needs and goals. Illume has a long-standing relationship with the ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Breast Center, built over two decades with hundreds of successful reconstruction cases. Dr. Chris Hussussian, who served as Chief of Surgery at ProHealth Waukesha for four years, led Illume’s surgical department in establishing the highest quality breast reconstruction services in the Milwaukee area.
  • Nipple Reconstruction and Areola Tattooing: For survivors seeking further reconstruction after a mastectomy, Illume offers advanced nipple reconstruction and areola tattooing. Nipple reconstruction involves using local tissue to rebuild the nipple, followed by areola tattooing to restore natural pigmentation. This technique allows patients to regain a sense of wholeness and symmetry, with personalized care to match skin tone and achieve a natural look.
  • Scar Treatment and Revision: Scarring after surgery can be a source of discomfort for many survivors. Illume offers a range of scar revision treatments, including laser therapy, to soften and minimize surgical scars. These treatments help smooth out skin texture and reduce discoloration, enhancing both the appearance and feel of the skin.

At Illume Cosmetic Surgery & MedSpa, we are committed to providing compassionate care for breast cancer survivors. Whether you’re exploring breast reconstruction, scar revision, or other restorative treatments, our experienced team is here to help you regain your confidence and feel your best. With personalized treatment plans and a focus on your unique needs, Illume is dedicated to supporting you at every step of your journey to recovery and renewal.
